Our people

We know we need to represent the rich diversity of our society. And we know people need to feel like they belong, no matter their background. So we’re aiming for our new hires to reflect UK society by the end of 2023. And our employees can join a range of diversity, equity and inclusion networks, from Colour(Full) to Pride. Find out more here.

What makes us proudest

We’ve always worked to make society better. In 1935, our founder, Allen Lane, established Penguin so that everyone could afford to buy, read and enjoy great books. And we remain true to Allen Lane’s original vision today, investing our money in books that tackle the issues we care about.

What we offer as well as your pay

Feel good financially

Get shopping discounts, childcare allowance and loans to pay for your transport and rental deposit. If you get sick or injured and can’t work, we’ll keep paying you until you’re better.

Prioritise your health

We offer healthcare plans to help cover your medical costs, including one for everyday treatments, one for if you become seriously ill and one that pays for private healthcare.

Treat yourself

Apply for a taste card and art pass to get discounts at restaurants, museums and galleries around the UK. Plus, get 60% off all our books and free copies of our Penguin quarterly reads.

Soak up the sun

Take Fridays off during the summer months to spend as you like!

Give back

We plant a new tree for every new full-time employee and offer everyone two days off to volunteer for a charity of their choice.

Feed your brain

We offer a learning allowance for employees to spend on education outside of work, and loads of opportunities for you to hear from your favourite authors through talks and events.

Get to know us better

What are your general working hours?

Most of the business work Monday to Friday 9:30am–5:30pm. We have a flexitime schedule, with core hours from 10am–4pm. During the summer, we have summer hours, which means you can finish on Fridays at 1pm and make up the hours throughout the week.

What’s your working policy?

Our offices are places to connect and collaborate with colleagues. And while we know that working flexibly is important to lots of people, for certain jobs on our team the work you’ll be doing means you’ll mainly be working on site (so, not working remotely at home).

How do you help people develop their careers?

Everyone can grow at Penguin. We’ll support you every step of the way with emerging talent programmes, mentorships, training and our learning platform, The Academy. We’ll get you up to speed on your job and your team with a welcome process tailored to you. And you can join our colleague community groups and build relationships with people across the business.

What type of culture do you encourage?

We’re a company of contrasts. And it’s our contrasts that make us special, and make your life at Penguin unique, challenging and rewarding. We’re big and small, we work as individuals and as teams, we do good in the world and we’re a successful business, we’re a long-standing company and we’re always trying new things.

What social events do you run?

There’s loads of ways to connect with your colleagues across the wider business. Connecting Cuppas, family fun days, quarterly company drinks, team away days and company volunteering opportunities all help us build relationships as a company. And get inspired at our flagship Penguin Presents event where you’ll connect with your colleagues, our amazing books and authors twice a year.

What accessibility support do you give?

We’re a Disability Confident Committed employer, and when we recruit you for a job we can adapt the hiring process to you if needed. We also offer Tailored Adjustment Plans to our team (that is, if you need support we can work together to adjust your working process to suit you better).

How do you give back to your community?

We have a social impact team, and it’s their job to make sure we stay committed to making society better. Their main goals are to give everyone equal access to books, to make books for everyone and to create the readers of the future. We also offer paid training programmes, resources, opportunities and mentoring to people who come from backgrounds that aren’t well-represented in publishing.
