What does a music events manager do?

I help with the administrative and logistical work of putting on gigs at the Roundhouse. I assist the senior music programmer to program the venue and book dates with promoters.

Once we have dates booked, I'll send out the contracts and do administrative tasks like organising the guest list. Closer to the time I help with the technical and production team in doing the advance for the show and then sometimes on the day of the show I'll be working as the venue rep.

What was your path to your current role?

I studied music technology at A Level and university. About halfway into my uni degree I realised I didn't really like that as much and was more interested in sociological history of music, so I took more of a focus on that.

After university I did an internship with a guy called Vince Power who was quite a big promoter back in the day and then that internship became full-time and I was there for nine months.

Then I joined the Roundhouse as originally as music events coordinator and then events manager.

Other than formal qualifications, what does skills do you need to do this job?

Being able to think on your feet is definitely very important. especially if I'm working on a gig and things are going a bit wrong.

I would also say it costs nothing to be nice. Being nice to people will often get you a long way. Not everyone is going to be nice in return, but that would be my approach to things.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

When we get really cool gigs that I'm really excited by, like Confidence Man, Steve Lacy, Mount Kimbie or Tierra Whack.

Working on those and sometimes being there on the day – it's very cool when you see something come through start to finish. That is something that is really fun to be a part of.

What’s the most challenging part?

When things are going wrong on the day of a show – there always seems to be new ways for things to go wrong.

Recently, we had a full-scale evacuation on one of our shows, which was the first time it had happened in my two and a half years of being here. Things can always surprise you but it's just about being nimble and able to react

What do you wish you knew when you started?

It's about the journey rather than the destination.

When I came out of university I wanted to work for a streaming service or a label and was just applying for anything. Eventually I got a job in working in live music but I would not have said when I was young that I want to be working for venues or working for promoters.

It's not worth putting all your eggs in one basket.
