Since Stormzy launched a scholarship, applications from black UK students to the University of Cambridge rose by 131%. 141 black students were admitted in 2022, compared with just 61 in 2018. Over the past five years the grime artist has provided financial support to 32 black students from less privileged backgrounds. This week he pledged to award funding to another 36 places over the next three years, with help from HSBC and the #Merky Foundation.

Just this week the Australian team posted a video criticising the tournament for its lack of collective bargaining rights and calling out the disparity in prize money compared to the men’s competition.
